The Lord of the Rings – quite a movie franchise, eh?

I wonder how many of us who saw the trilogy ever read the books. I confess, I have only read the first. So much is lost in the transition from books – that often take many years to write – to movies. We credit those who write the screenplays and those who direct and “act” in the movies with the story itself. But what about the author of the original story, the book or books?

If we take a look at the author of Lord of the Rings, John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (J.R.R. Tolkien), we find an incredible personality – to say the least. Tolkien was a member of a literary group called the Inklings. The Inklings were an informal literary discussion group at the University of Oxford for nearly two decades between the early 1930s and late 1949. The group included Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and Owen Barfield.

Owen Barfield attended a lecture given by Rudolf Steiner in 1924. Thereafter he studied the work and philosophy of Rudolf Steiner throughout his life, translated some of his works, and had some of his own early essays published in anthroposophical publications.

Taking into account that Owen Barfield was a full Anthroposophist by the time the Inklings formed their group, and that The Lord of the Rings was written between 1937 and 1949, it seems all too likely that Anthroposophy influenced Tolkien’s work. It’s in that Light that I offer the following.

Once upon a time, in the not so distant past, humanity was offered a ring of power. Not a ring of the form of substance one might think – round, made of gold which one wears on a finger. This ring was one of subjugation; A colosseum of unseen walls. At first we embraced what it provided: easy living, entertainment, less requirement of thought and intelligence. It offered us a simple way of looking at life, simple, easily digestible answers to the big questions about life. It “proved” to our tired psyches that we are nothing more than descendants of the simian order of primates. Soon to disappear was the instinctive meaning and hierarchy of our true nature as Human Beings.

In the early epochs of formalized religion, another part of the shrinking ring of power, we were told that the animal kingdom is under our jurisdiction. Drilled into our psyche was the lie that we can do whatever we desire to animals, for they are… just animals under our authority. So we experimented on them without boundary. We committed acts of cruel vivisection in the name of “bettering” humanity. As this practice became acceptable to the point of our cognizant ignorance, we forgot that such practices exist.

By this time we had fully adjusted ourselves – through government controlled education and parental mentoring – to the idea that we, ourselves, are nothing more than “higher” animals. This became the initial preparation for what came next.

In the arena of the ring of power we looked in the mirror and viewed exactly what “they” had concocted for us to believe: Here was an animal under another’s jurisdiction, fed with continual distraction from reality, dumbed down to a dependence on an authoritarian overlord for our thought processes. As long as the “goodies” were mainlined into our very veins of life, we did not care. We did not question. The mantra of the day so easily became, “I’m happy – what has that got to do with me?”

The stage was set. We were no longer “merely players.” We were now pawns on the playing field, confined to our respective squares, ready – AND WILLING – to move when instructed. And so we did. Masks. Separation. Lockdowns. Deadly treatments. And now?

The beast has reared its ugly head. The ring has been pulled tight, now a noose squeezing not just the Life, but the Light, from those who willingly submit. Pawns played. Pawns lost. Few pieces are left on the board and the rest of us feel overwhelmed by the vacuum left in the wake of so much death. Family members are dying. Long time friends are dying. Those around us – there one day, simply vanished the next.

And now? Those who are left, those who have chosen purity, those that have held to the moral absolute of personal sovereignty and freedom, it is we who now stand against the masses, the masses composed of those who have chosen “self” over “we.”

We feel surrounded on all sides by this madness by the forces of darkness and the creatures of doom that they have created – by the permission of the willing. And so we are. Surrounded. Seemingly outnumbered. How shall we survive against such apparent overwhelming odds? Are these odds apparent? Or are they part of the smoke and mirror scheme of the lords of darkness to delude even “we” into believing we are defeated before the battle is through? Appearances in the physical, material realm are (always) deceiving. Today, right now, is no different. What, then, is needed?

The Light. We need the Light that has been sparked within each one of us. It is time – now more than ever – to hold up the mirror of our own Self to reflect back to those lost in darkness the distant flame that resides yet still. If they see no light, they are already lost; They have been consumed by the darkness and karma will reveal to them much later this truth. What, then, must be done?

We need to take hold of the ring. And against all temptation, we must cast it BACK into the abyss from where it came – back into the darkness where evil feeds upon itself and ultimately self-destructs. There will be those who want the ring for themselves – those who have craved the power it provides over the masses. We must let go of that power and by the force of our own moral will hand it over and let them be consumed by their own greed and lust. And, if we must, if the noble act of will demands we push them back, then push them back we must. For not to do so is the bedfellow of support for evil.

Such greed, such lust for self and for power will, in times future, bemoan the emergence of “human beings” whose decadent personas are reflected in their very countenance. They will be ugly – beings most difficult to look upon.

And it will be we whom the awakening of them seek for help. Will we be endowed within with enough Love to do so? For it is Love that creates, never destroys; heals, never wounds. Love is what begins as a seed when we respond to the Light on which we depend to grow. Watered by the company of the gods, we will, in times very distant, defeat those who continually give themselves over to the darkness. There will be not only one who finds the strength to climb the mountain of moral thinking, feeling and willing. There will be many. And make no mistake – though we might be fewer in number, the power of Love in a single Human Being overwhelms a thousand fold of the darkness. Darkness simply cannot exist when confronted by Light. And when evil’s ring of power is finally cast back into the forge of its making, Humanity will stand, even as it stands now before the time.

So I implore you my brothers, my sisters: Stand tall. Stand resolute. Stand firm. Yours is the power of Love, not of the false ring of power. Take up the sword of your Higher Self, ready to wield your personal sovereignty against this enemy. Do not fold. Do not waver. Move forever forward, never – never – backward. Yours is the future if you choose to grasp it.

Together we will soon witness the coming down of the tower. Our benefactor – the Godhead and His dominions – shall bring down the tower once we have shown ourselves to be loyal – to ourselves, each other, and to all that is Divine Love.
